Track Access Now Open to Community
January 9, 2012 – 7:20 pm | 3 Comments

We live in a community filled with professional athletes training for the highest levels of competition, as well as a place where community members take fitness and outdoor enthusiasm to higher-than-average levels. Thankfully, scaling the fences of the five state-of-the-art tracks in town won’t be part of anybody’s workout anymore.

After a long period of negotiation and collaboration of many local entities and community members, residents can now register with the Flagstaff Unified School District to purchase a personal key card, granting access to three track facilities during predetermined times that are coordinated with class schedules, athletic events, and other uses.

“We started the discussion by finding common ground, which was the recognition that the tracks, although technically school district property, were in fact community assets that were paid for through the local tax base provided by the community,” wrote Paul Kulpinski, who is running for Flagstaff mayor, in a blog post. “Additionally, everyone agreed that the safety of students and the protection of the facilities were a top priority.”

The result? Anybody who would like to utilize the tracks can purchase a key card from the Human Resources Department at the FUSD District Office (3285 E. Sparrow Avenue). A card costs $30 for three months and exact change or a check is required. For more information, check out the FUSD website.
